Being able to use naturalistic documentary shooting style and digital cameras, horror filmmakers where one of the first ones who started producing low budget digital movies that had commercial value. As times change, horror producers try to pick up elements from successful A-list horror films and TV programs.

Horror comedies is a fun sub-genre mostly targeted to younger audiences, often making fun of famous horror movies. This involves even Hollywood produced parodies like Scary Movie that has become more of a cult classic, then ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ – the movie they were making fun of. Also, humorous grind house style violence influenced by Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof and directors like Robert Rodriquez have made grind house weird humour horror comedies trendy again.
